Since ozone is a strong oxidant with a high potential difference (2.07V), it oxidizes microbes and organics. The chemical formulae is O3, and the molecular weight 48. It is colorless at room temperature, has a unique odor stimulating nose, and has a deep blue color at -180 oC.
Ozone has been applied to water purification plants mainly for the purpose of sterilization . Since it was recognized to oxidize/remove organic pollutants in water, it has been applied to not only sterilization but also removal of iron, manganese, taste, odor, algae, color, and organic substances.
In addition, it has been efficiently applied to removal of such difficult-to-degrade substances as COD, BOD, phenols, and cyanides.
